Seven Ways of Looking At Present Tense

I.
I'm flying free. I have channeled blackbirds
and there is nothing above or below me.

II.
Every second is an update; consistently
this page refuses to let me forget
this is now and I'm still nowhere at all.

III.
There is no lemon in my tea but I'm not
so far out of place that I have lost sight
of opportunity, or lemon tree.

IV.
What used to be is gone but even in
memory it will never stop being now.

V.
Take a second and stand it on its head.

VI.
Just when you think you couldn't be less alive
you stop and realize you're thinking about
commiting suicide while still breathing.

VII.
My skin is bare, my skin is theirs to keep.
Put the Polaroid in your pocket; somewhere
something else is worth capturing on film.

Author's Comments

A tribute to Sarah 'Space' Felder
who, to be fair, copied the title from Wallace Stevens
so I don't feel so bad about almost but not completely
taking ideas from her title from his title.

I went to Emerson College this summer with the most amazing people. It was a five week writing program. I wanted to stay in the dorms but my boyfriend, who's leaving for Plymouth State this Sunday, didn't want me to be unaccessible when he's going away, and I'll be a senior next year. It makes sense for me to let him have his time because mine will come later.

He was so uncomfortable with me going to college before him. Haha what a fruit. But I will never forget Steven Breyak, my Poetry professor, Craig Panzer, my hilarious Lit Mag professor, and Kat Gonso, my vivacious Personal Essay professor. This was the best thing that I ever did for myself. Honestly.

Many more poems are to come up as a result of this, including an essay [or two], perhaps the written layout of a graphic novel in the process? And on my blog, to be premiered within the week, scanlations of From the Lion's Mouth, our literary documentation of our summer together.

Wow. I'm completely awestruck. You write so beautifully Ivy. This is one of the things I've missed in my extreme absence. Your way with words always seems to inspire me.
